Our first pick is Ukrainian designerAnna Marinenko. While studying outdoor vistas, Anna observed the aesthetic similarity between the oscillating heights of mountains, trees and skylines and the wave forms of music.

Anna drew a symbolic and visual connection between noise and nature and composed a series of graphic expressions which compare those images side-by-side, matching them together into a single picture. A look at her compositions speaks volumes, pun intended!

Nature can be the perfect surrounding for meditation and relaxation. Architecture students at theEstonian Academy of Arts took this idea further by turning a forest clearing in Võru county as a space for community engagement.

They conceived the idea of a forest library nearRMK’s Pähni Nature Center and installed three giant wooden megaphones there. They are called ‘Ruup’, and they span three meters in diameter, offering those seated and lying within ample space for reading or resting. Also, the quiet sounds of chirping birds and rustling leaves are amplified to surrounding site visitors!

The students were instructed by architects Aet Ader, Karin Tõugu, Kadri Klement, and Mari Hunt from the architecture office B210, and the designers Tõnis Kalve and Ahti Grünberg from Derelict, a company that creates re-purposed furniture.

It is common knowledge that rings on a tree can give information about its age. Slices of trees are not uniform, and they tell a story about the tree’s history.Bartholomäus Traubeck wondered: what will it sound like, if we try to turn those rings into a vinyl record? What music might a tree make?

Bartholomäus created equipment that can translate tree rings into music by playing them on a turntable. Rather than use a needle like a record, sensors gather information about the wood’s color and texture and use an algorithm that translates variations into piano notes. The album, appropriately titled “Years”, is available, digitally or on vinyl. The end product of these arbor “records” is haunting and beautiful and you need to check it out!
